Ultimate s'more cookie: Mallomar or MoonPie?

Both of these s'mores-like treats have been around for over a century. Each cookie involves a graham cracker base, marshmallow filling, and chocolate coating—but one of the few differences between the two is that MoonPies are closed graham cracker sandwiches. Nevertheless, each treat has its own cult following. Which s'mores sammie is better?

Mallomars began in Hoboken, NJ, in 1913, and despite humble beginnings, these precious cookies have gained intense fanfare, particularly in the northeastern United States. The cookies involve a graham cracker base, a thick marshmallow filling and a dark chocolate coating.

We love a retro factory-tour, and according to this one (which follows the Canadian counterpart of the Mallomar), these cookies require "military-like precision" and a whole bunch of trade secrets. It doesn't get any better than that!

The catch of the Mallomar is that they are only sold seasonally from September to March (can't have that chocolate melting in transit!). As a result, Mallomar fans stock these babies up for months and months until a new batch is finally released.

The MoonPie, on the other hand, had its start in 1917 in Chattanooga, TN. According to the Culture Trip, the Moon Pie legend goes something like this:

A traveling salesman by the name of Earl Mitchell asked some coal miners if they’d like a snack while taking a break. One of the miners asked for a snack with graham cracker and marshmallow, requesting one “as big as the moon,” which is what inspired the name Moon Pie.

The snack involves two graham cracker cookies and a creamy marshmallow filling, all of which is "enrobed" in chocolate. Fanfare for the MoonPie is so intense, the cookie sandwich has its own annual festival held in Bell Buckle, TN.

Not only does MoonPie serve up a delicious s'more-on-the-go, but the retro brand has stepped into the 21st century by delighting followers on Twitter. How could you not love a cookie that talks back?

The MoonPie factory deserves love, too.
